《Living With Your Host Family》
The length of stay at your host family’s home which TFP (Trinity Foundation Programme) arranges is 4 weeks and 5 days. Of course, it is possible to extend this period under negotiation with your host family. Please make sure to talk about extension, and if you need to leave after 4 weeks, please notify TFP staff ahead of time.
Be sure to understand that living with your host family is not the same as living in a hotel. Your host family will welcome you as a member of the family. Therefore, you are not a guest, so please look after yourself as much as possible such as helping out assertively.
Also, there will be many things which you will question when living abroad, and there will be times when misunderstandings arise from the difference in language. Asking questions is very important when communicating. Please ask with courage to get to know each home’s rules too. Keep in mind the following to enjoy the time with your host family.
Cherish the time with your host family; do not shut yourself up in your room.
Even if you are not confident with your English, do not be shy and talk as much as possible with your host family.
In order to have a lively conversation with your host family, introduce various things about Japan, such as culture, history and society etc.
When asking for something, use polite phrases such as “Please…â€, “Could you…†and “Would you…â€.
Do not forget little terms such as “thank you†and “sorryâ€.
There are various rules amongst the host families so be sure to follow them.
Be sure to make the bed (when you get up, prepare the bed and pillows so they are the same as when going to bed) every day.
Try not to worry your host family. When you are going out, let them know where you are going, who you are going with and when you are coming back. If you are going to be late, be sure to phone them etc. They can be waiting for you with food prepared, and because you are a member of the family, the host family will be terribly worried about you if you are late without getting in touch.
Ask your host family before inviting your friends.
Except in the case of emergency, refrain from using your host family’s phone as much as possible. It is handy if you buy a mobile phone to use locally. To call Japan, use collect call or an international telephone card.
In most homes of Britain, because the toilet, shower, bath and washbasin are in one room, it will bother the family if you use the shower for a long time. It is a good idea to check the appropriate time to use the shower and bath and how to use them.
You may be bewildered by the difference in the culture and customs, but make the effort to understand them, not criticize them.
《Crime》
Bangor is a safe town even within Britain, and you may often be greeted “Good morning!†from people passing by. However, always keep in mind that it is not as safe as Japan. You will need to be careful several times as much as usual when going out to big cities such as London. A few points to protect yourself from crime will be introduced.
There is no need to carry your passport with you at all times. It is a good idea to keep it in a suitcase with a lock etc. (You will need your passport when going to Dublin, Ireland.)
– Be aware of your baggage to protect yourself from pick-pocketing. If you are going to use a bag which is open, it will be better to hold it down with your hand. Also, it is safer to avoid backpacks. You may have the contents taken at the London subway. If you have a back pack put it on your front, or under your arm, in crowded places
Avoid walking on your own in the dark at night. (Especially women). Also, if you are going to be late, it may be safer to go home by taxi rather than by bus on your own. How about contributing money jointly and sharing a taxi with your friend who is going the same way?
《Culture Shock/ Homesickness》
To live in a place you do not know and to carry on studying with a language other than your own is more difficult than you think. In Japan, family and friends you can speak your mind to are close to you, but they are not present over here. That is why you can discover your true self. To prevent homesickness, it will be good to write letters and call. In letters, you may be able to express what you cannot in Japan. The people waiting for you to come back will probably be looking forward for you getting in touch.
During the program, you will see many cultural differences. As an example, it is very important in the British academic world to keep the appointed time. Those who are late to class, or those who do not come back to class after breaks will be given a strict warning. Also, if somebody who does not speak Japanese is present, it is rude to carry on speaking Japanese. Like Welsh people, who will speak in English if there is somebody who does not speak Welsh, their mother tongue, please make the effort to speak in English, as a sign of good manners. If you feel you want to speak in Japanese no matter what when you are seeing your friends, ask “Could I speak in Japanese?â€.
《To Maintain Health》
It is cold in Britain! Even in the summer, in contrast to the fierce heat in Japan, you will feel that summer in Bangor is cool. It can become cold suddenly when the sun goes down even if it is warm during the day. It would be handy to take a cardigan etc. with you when you are going to be late. Also, the sun goes down quickly in the winter, and it is colder than the Japanese winter. You can easily become ill, so wear warm clothes at all times and try not to catch a cold.
Enough sleep and a good amount of exercise are essential factors to keep healthy. Do not forget to rest if you feel you are tired.
《Complaints and Grievances》
If you have any problem of any sort you may discuss it with the member of staff you prefer to talk to. Please book an appointment with the person concerned. It may be possible to speak to hi/her immediately if it is urgent. In case of an emergency, when you are not at college, you may ring Ms. Kumi Sunada on 07881 782 299. You may put your complaint in writing if you prefer. Any problem is taken seriously and will be attended to as soon as possible.
